Meditation and Mindfulness with Pov Socheat

Meditation is a way to train attention and become more aware of the body, feelings, and thoughts. It does not require you to force the mind to become empty. Beginners can start by sitting comfortably, noticing the natural breath, and gently returning attention whenever the mind wanders.

I am Pov Socheat, a Cambodian Buddhist monk and character education teacher. This page introduces practical meditation and mindfulness for Cambodian learners, international students, and anyone who wants to explore Buddhist contemplative practice in an accessible way.

What You Can Explore

  • Breathing meditation: notice the in-breath and out-breath without trying to control them.
  • Mindfulness in daily life: practise paying attention while walking, eating, listening, or doing ordinary tasks.
  • Understanding thoughts and emotions: observe thoughts and feelings with curiosity rather than immediately reacting to them.
  • Buddhist context: learn how mindfulness and meditation fit within the wider path of ethical conduct, mental cultivation, and wisdom.
  • Group or introductory sessions: discuss whether a session may suit your learning goals and circumstances.

A Simple Practice for Beginners

  1. Sit in a stable, comfortable posture and let the shoulders relax.
  2. Notice the physical sensation of breathing for a few minutes.
  3. When attention wanders, acknowledge it gently and return to the breath.
  4. End by noticing how you feel, without judging the practice as a success or failure.

Start with a short period that feels manageable. If focusing on the breath feels uncomfortable, keep your eyes open, notice sounds around you, or stop and choose a grounding activity instead. Meditation is not a substitute for professional medical or mental-health care when that care is needed.
