Deep in the natural landscape of Kirirom Mountain, Cambodia, there is a special place known as Phnom Tevak<\/strong>, a name that can be understood as \u201cDeva Mountain\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cMountain of the Gods.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I had the opportunity to visit this place and take these photographs myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What interested me most was not only the beauty of the sculptures and the surrounding forest, but also the stories represented through the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to the local story I learned about Phnom Tevak, the cave was developed with two sides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One side represents Hindu gods and stories<\/strong>, while the other represents Buddhist stories and images of the Buddha<\/strong>. Standing among these sculptures, I found myself thinking about how many layers of Cambodian culture have been shaped by spiritual traditions over centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The stones are not simply objects of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They tell stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They represent beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And they give us a glimpse into the ways people have expressed their understanding of life, spirituality, suffering, compassion, and the world around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When we look at Cambodian history and culture, we can see influences from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For many visitors, seeing Hindu and Buddhist imagery together in one place may seem surprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But for me, it is an opportunity to learn rather than to separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Different traditions may have different teachings, stories, and practices, but they can also exist within the same cultural landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sculptures at Phnom Tevak reminded me that Khmer heritage cannot always be understood through only one religious or cultural lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a story shaped by many generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the things I found especially beautiful about Phnom Tevak was the relationship between the sculptures and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Buddha images are not displayed in a modern gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are surrounded by trees, rocks, leaves, mountains, and the quiet atmosphere of the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This creates a different experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I stood there, I did not feel that I was simply looking at a statue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I felt that I was looking at a story that had been placed within nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The forest itself seemed to become part of the experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps this is one reason places like this can make us slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We become quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes, when we become quiet, we begin to notice what is happening inside our own minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Among the sculptures are different representations of Buddhist stories and the Buddha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are images of meditation, teaching, and peaceful contemplation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There are also scenes that invite us to think about the journey of the Buddha and the values that Buddhism continues to teach today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For me, the most important question is not only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat story does this sculpture represent?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat can this story teach us about our own lives?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A sculpture of the Buddha sitting peacefully may remind us about the value of stillness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A story about suffering may remind us that suffering is part of human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A story about compassion may remind us to be kinder to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In this way, ancient stories can still speak to modern people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Phnom Tevak is more than a place I visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It became a place where I could reflect on religion, culture, history, art, nature, and human life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a Cambodian, I also find something meaningful in seeing Khmer spiritual stories represented within the natural landscape of our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Places like this remind us that cultural heritage is not only something we read about in books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes, we can walk through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can touch the stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We can stand quietly beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And we can ask ourselves what these stories mean for us today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Places connected with cultural and spiritual heritage deserve care and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The sculptures may be made of stone, but the stories they carry are part of something much more fragile: memory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we do not learn about these places, future generations may see only old stones and statues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if we take the time to understand them, we may see something much deeper\u2014a connection between people, beliefs, art, history, and the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Preserving heritage therefore means more than preserving physical objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/povsocheatbuddhismenglish.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/DSC04719-1024x683.jpg\")
